EST4 Email Configuration Guidance

One of the features in the EST4 is the email capabilities. This allows the system to send emails on status changes to the system. Email is an ancillary function of the EST4 that it is configured as part of the 4-FWAL and the email service in the 4-CU Configuration Utility.

Because this is configured in the 4-CU, the ability to modify the email address list as people change roles exists as part of a panel download. As any download to the life safety system requires retesting a portion of the system, this is something that must be planned out with the Edwards SP. Many end users will want to manage that distribution list themselves which is difficult with these constraints.

A solution that may not be obvious, is the use of an email forwarding service. This type of service will accept emails to a specific email address and then forward them to a list that is managed as part of that service.

This type of email forwarding has been tested with a simple Gmail email address. This email provider has the ability to forward any email received to one or more different email addresses.

Other services will be similar but will likely have many more features. This may include the ability to filter based on message content so for example, any email with the word “Trouble” will be forwarded to the email addresses of people in the maintenance department.

The general process to do this is as follows:
  • Establish the email forwarding service email address
  • Have the 4-FWAL3 or 4-FWAL4 configured to provide one email service using the email forwarding address
  • Have the project with this email configuration downloaded to the system
    • This should be scheduled just prior to a normal inspection so that the required system retest will take place without any additional resources required
  • Configure the email forwarding service for one or more destination email addresses
  • Test the operation.
Once done, the 4-FWAL will send an email per event to the designated address. That email will then be forwarded to all of the addresses as configured by the end user. They can then manage the distribution list without any need to modify the EST4 project file or retest the system.

Note that the 4-FWAL3 and 4-FWAL4 are the only versions of the EST4 firewall module that support email functions.

Please visit the MyEddie website (Resources & Training > Installation Sheets) and download the latest version of the "EST4 Network Services Configuration Worksheet", P/N 3102627-EN for more information and for other Ethernet services available from the EST4 and the 4-FWAL.

Edwards is pleased to announce the introduction of ceiling mounted mass notification Genesis LED appliances. These compliment the wall mounted appliances launched last year and come with a range of color and marking options.

Genesis LED Ceiling Mass Notification strobes and speaker-strobes combine high performance output with a sleek low-profile design and energy-efficient technology that makes them less expensive to install and operate. High performance LEDs require fewer power supplies, backup power, and batteries. These new appliances are designed with energy-efficiency, and life safety in mind.

Genesis LED Ceiling Mass Notification strobes use high efficiency optics, combined with patented electronics, to deliver a highly controlled and efficiently focused light distribution pattern in exchange for lower current requirements. NEW Genesis™ LED Custom Color Covers

Edwards is pleased to offer a range of custom-colored cover skins for the popular Genesis LED portfolio of notification appliances.

In many applications the overall design space has been carefully crafted and building designers are keen to retain the overall aesthetics with color-matching life safety appliances hanging on the ceilings or walls.

Theme parks, modern hotels and restaurant chains, for example, are good examples of where color-coordinated devices are preferred over the typical red or white units.
